The photographs in ‘Basement series’ constitute parts of the processes involved in projects that Anne Brodie has been working on in her basement studio over the past 6 years.

In her attempt to achieve specific outcomes, in particular the growth of bioluminescent algae, she became frustrated with consecutive failures. She looked around and realized she was missing much of the work. The failed attempts, the detritus, the dead bees, the tissue found crumpled inside the pocket of her jacket that she wore all the time in the Antarctic; were as much a part of her work as the proposed end result.

By photographing them in a formal still life, it gives the objects a presence that would otherwise be overlooked.
